The 1940s were eventful years. He attended Central College in Pella, Iowa and got his B.A. degree there after serving in the Army Air Force during World War II. He earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of Iowa. He accepted the position of High School Principal in Pella, Iowa. After 30 years as Principal, he resigned to move to Colorado.
On June 26, 1947 he married Martha Vande Voort. Their three sons are: David, who with his wife Katherine, lives in Menlo Park, CA. Their extended family are also California residents; Paul, who lives in Palm Springs, CA; and John, who with his wife Teri live in Woodbury, MN. Their children are Brian, who lives in Minneapolis and Emily, who is a graduate student at the University of Maine.
In 1979, Jean and Martha moved to Colorado and enjoyed twenty-five wonderful years, spending time in the mountains and traveling extensively. They moved to Woodbury, MN in 2004, where Martha still lives.
Jean's special interests, besides parenting and education, were photography, cars (he liked that Model A), traveling, and numbers.
On May 11,2015, Jean was interred in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Section 37 Site 1263.
